group of studnets Award winners Into the woods jr

Dear Addams Community:

It has been a fantastic week as we have raised awareness for different groups through participating in Special Olympics Illinois Respect Week. Thank you to all the staff members and students that showed support by dressing in different colors each day. This has been the perfect kickoff to March Happiness month. In addition, we would like to congratulate our wrestling and girls’ volleyball teams for all their accomplishments this season as they represented our school with honor at the District 54 tournaments for the respective sports.

Turning the page, next week will be a big one for many students at Addams.  We are days away from opening night of the 2023 Jane Addams Junior High Musical- Into the Woods Jr.! The amazing cast and crew have worked hard to make this show come alive on stage! The performances will be Saturday, March 11th at 1:00pm and 7:00pm and Sunday, March 12th at 1:00pm! Tickets go on sale for $3.00 Monday during lunch, they will also be sold at the door! They cannot wait to share the journey Into the Woods with you!

As always, do not hesitate to reach out as we work in partnership to support our students in reaching their potential.

Summer Camp Scholarships Available
As part of its commitment to life-long learning, the Schaumburg Township Council of PTAs (STC) offers scholarships for summer programs/camps to District 54 students currently in Kindergarten through 7th grade who wish to broaden their education, talents and experiences.

**Please note the parent/guardian must be a current PTA member at the school attended by the child applying for the scholarship.**

You are responsible for registering your child for the camp/program indicated. Registration is recommended to ensure your child secures a spot.  If you wait to see if your child is awarded a scholarship before registering, your child runs the risk of the program being full or cancelled. Please make sure you register by May 20th.   This must be a summer camp or program completed by Labor Day.  If your camp/program is cancelled contact us with an eligible alternative within the same organization.

Click these links to access the application: English version,  Spanish version

**The application and supporting documents are due April 7, 2023.**

IAR (Illinois Assessment of Readiness)
Each spring, students in District 54 take federally mandated assessments (IAR) designed to help school districts understand how our students are growing academically.  This year, the English Language Arts and Math Assessment for grades 3-8 will be given at school starting March 6th.  At Addams, students will test on March 7, 9 and 10.

Continuous Reflection and Goal Setting
Winter has always been a time in schools for reflection and goal setting.  Currently, our students and staff are reflecting on their academic and social emotional progress while creating new goals for the second half of the school year.  We value the strength of our home/school connection, so please make sure to ask your child(ren) what goals they have set for the remainder of the school year.  Please know that the Whole Child Profile which includes the winter MAP scores, can be found in Infinite Campus.

Parents/Guardians can log in to your Parent Portal Account, select MORE, then Student Reports and select your child’s name.  Please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher with any questions.

Graduation Gowns and Medallions
The 8th grade graduation date will not be finalized by the school district until March. The School Board and administration wait until the threat of inclement weather/snow days are over before settling on a date. However, we have already begun preparations for graduation. We have gathered student sizes for graduation gowns. As part of our ceremony, all students will wear a gown and receive a keepsake medallion. Payment for gowns and medallions can be made in one of three ways:

  1. Log on to the school store on the Infinite Campus Parent Portal and purchase the gown/medallion. The cost is $22 (with a $2 processing fee).
  2. Make a check out to Addams Junior High for $22 and drop it off at the Addams office.
  3. Send your student with $22 cash in an envelope with their name on it, labeled “graduation fee”.

Payment is due ASAP.  Please email Mr. Bingen if you are in need of financial assistance.

5Essentials

Once again we are reaching out to our families and asking you to participate in the annual Illinois 5Essentials Survey to provide us with your perspective and help guide our school improvement efforts. The parent survey will be available online through March 31, 2023, at survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois

The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and is available in English and Spanish. Note: the survey will time out and you will need to start over if you don’t finish in one sitting.

If you have more than one child, you may complete the survey for each child. You will be asked to select your county and then your child’s school. Be aware that there are other “Jane Addams” schools in Illinois so make sure you are picking the one in Schaumburg.

Windy City Bulls Game – March 21
The Windy City Bulls will host a District 54 takeover night on Tuesday, March 21, at the NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, and a portion of the proceeds from each $20 ticket purchased will be donated to the District 54 Education Foundation Crisis Fund to support families in our community.

Click here for more information or to purchase tickets!

The District 54 takeover night will feature District 54 students participating in performances and other on-court experiences before and during breaks in the game, as well as a District 54 Special Olympics basketball match at halftime.

District 54 Personal Assessment of Core Competency Survey
District 54 is committed to ensuring not only the academic success of each child, but also their social-emotional wellbeing. Your insight as a parent/guardian is essential in creating the most well-rounded picture of your student’s strengths and opportunities for growth. To gather your perspective, District 54 will send families of students in grades 3-8 an email link for each child to the District 54 Personal Assessment of Core Competency Survey on Monday, January 9th.  Thank you in advance for participating in this survey, as we believe the home-school collaboration is critical to best support your child’s overall well-being.

District 54 Virtual Backpack

District 54 shares information about community events with our students and families through our Virtual Backpack.  We know that parents are interested in extracurricular activities. At the same time, we don’t want the homework, letters from the teachers, school news and other important district information to get lost among the countless other pieces of paper in our students’ backpacks.  Please click here for additional information.
