News from Addams September 6, 2019

Dear Addams Community:

We hope everyone had an amazing week! The picture above is a visual representation of what the Addams staff believes is the key to success for our students this year. We talk a lot in classes, Inspire lessons and assemblies about the fact that life may not always be sunshine and roses, but being grateful for what we have each day in pursuit of happiness will lead to long term optimism. Additionally, if we go at our work with a mentality that we will not give up when times are rough with GRIT (Grow, Rebound, Improve and Try Again), we will be successful not only at Addams, but in life. Periodically, please ask your child to explain these terms at home. Help us, to help them “Join the Movement” of Jane Addams Junior High. (As an aside, I told the students on the announcements this morning that the Chicago Bears will need to use these tenets today to overcome last night’s loss to the Packers.)

If you are not yet following us on Instagram, Twitter and/or Facebook @AddamsCrusaders, what are you waiting for? Our staff works very hard to bring our story of learning out to the world. Please check us out.

Have a great weekend!

Please read on for important upcoming events at Addams and District 54:

Curriculum Night
Addams will host its Curriculum Night on September 11, 2019 from 6:00-8:10 PMThis evening provides our staff the opportunity to interact with you and help set the tone for a positive school year. During Curriculum Night, you will have an opportunity to see our school, hear about our curriculum, and most importantly, meet our staff. Our curriculum, special programs, and student expectations will be part of the teacher presentations. Although Curriculum Night is not intended for individual conferences, you will have an opportunity to discuss your child specifically during conferences scheduled for October 10-11.  The night will start with an informational overview from administration at 6:00 in the gym. Parents will then be able to follow their student’s schedule and hear from each individual teacher.  Please note: Curriculum Night is a parents-only evening.

We will send a copy of your child’s schedule home this coming Wednesday afternoon. Please bring it with you as you will need their locker combination to take part in an activity. (It is a secret, so don’t tell them.)

A few reminders from the Nurse’s Office:

“I don’t feel well, I want to go home”
Protocol for if your child is not feeling well during the school day:

First your child should notify their teacher that they do not feel well.  The teacher will send them to the Nurse. The Nurse will assess and evaluate your child’s symptoms.  If needed the Nurse will call the parent/guardian.

*Please remind your child that they are not to text you during school hours. Starting next week students will receive a yellow slip if caught texting home for not feeling well.

Cough Drops in School
With written verification from you, your child may have cough drops during the school day for 2 consecutive days. If needed more than 2 days, the Physician’s Medication Request Form and the Medication in School Parent form must be completed and submitted to the School Nurse.  You may send, with your child, 3 cough drops in a plastic baggie along with your note.  Make sure your child knows when and how to use the cough drops. Most cough drop manufacturers recommend to “Dissolve 1 drop slowly in the mouth. Repeat every 2 hours as needed”.

Being medically excused from Physical Education class
With written verification from you, your child may be excused from physical education for 1 to 3 consecutive days following an illness or accident.  Any restriction for more than 3 days requires written verification from your doctor detailing the length and type of restriction.
