News from Addams 8/9/2017
Dear Addams community,
We hope to see many of you tomorrow at Addams! In an effort to provide an easy and stress-free experience for you and your student, please review the following updates regarding Information Day and the informational Chromebook meetings.
School Information Day will be held tomorrow August 10 from 9 AM -11 AM and again from 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM at Addams Junior High. This is an opportunity for students to receive their schedules, purchase PE uniforms, and pre-order yearbooks. We hope that you will be able to attend, but if you cannot, schedules can be picked up in the office beginning on August 16.
Proof of Residency (REQUIRED for all families)
Whether you rent or own your home, all families must prove residency before the beginning of the school year. Correspondence has been mailed to your home if we are in need of this information. Schedules will be withheld (and your child will not be able to begin the year) if residency is not current or you have not proved residency. If you are planning to attend Information Day, bring residency documents with you. Click here for a list of information needed. We would highly suggest coming in during the AM session (9-11 a.m.), as time spent in line will be shorter. If you cannot attend Information Day, you can stop by our office any day between now and the start of the school year with documentation.
Chromebook One-to-One Initiative
This coming school year, each Addams student will be issued a Dell Chromebook laptop computer as the district is continuing a one-to-one digital learning program. Parents, 7th graders and new students need to attend one of the following parent meetings before receiving the Chromebook: August 10 at 8:15 am or August 10 at 4 pm. Returning 8th grade students and families do not need to attend the Chromebook parent meeting. Also, all parents are required to fill out the optional Chromebook insurance paperwork (was mailed to houses last week) regardless of whether or not you choose to purchase insurance.
The process of scheduling a junior high school of 700 students is extremely complex. All students were given the opportunity this past winter to pick two elective choices, but were told that their choices were not guaranteed. While we tried to honor these requests, not all students will receive the elective they chose. As such, we will not be able to change schedules if students did not receive their first choice for electives. Doing so would create unbalanced classes and upset the instructional environment for all. Thank you in advance for understanding.
Jane Addams 4th Annual Block Party
On Information Day from 4:30 to 6:00 pm, we will be holding our 4th Annual Block Party. This will provide an opportunity for our Addams students and parents to mingle with some of the Addams staff. Old Town Pizza and Culvers on Wise Road will be generously donating some pizza, water and custard. Bring a blanket and enjoy some DJ music and good friends. (If it happens to rain, the event will be canceled. We are watching the weather forecast like a hawk and keeping our fingers crossed. )
7th graders and new students
We will have a few student representatives available to give an optional “brief” tour of the building. After completing the Information Day process, stop by the guidance office, if you are interested. As custodians are still in the process of preparing the building, parents and students will not be allowed to wander the building on Information Day.
The first day of school, Monday, August 21, is for 7th graders only! On this day, we will lead the students right off the bus or out of their parent’s cars into the gym for an introductory assembly and then spend the day getting them used to “all things” Addams. Students will be given a tour of the building and have a significant amount of time to try lockers, get organized and take part in many other activities to reduce the anxiety of starting junior high. This is considered a regular day of school, with the building opening at 7:30 am and students dismissed at 2:15 PM.
Similar arrangements will be made on the second day of school for new 8th graders to the building.
Other noteworthy items:
- Payment Information: All fees and purchases will need to be made with cash or check. Credit card payment is not available. If you chose to pay by check, you will need to write separate checks for yearbook, PE uniform and Chromebook insurance.
- School Nurse: The school nurse, Irene Kempf, will be available on Information Day. Completed physical forms may be turned in to her. Additionally, this is an opportunity to provide us with any medical concerns or updates regarding your student.
